How to check a broker's licence in five minutes

The licence number on a broker's website proves nothing until you've matched it on the regulator's own register.

Key points
  • Find the register yourself, not through a link the broker gave you
  • Match the company name, website and phone exactly
  • Check which company your account agreement names

1. Find the register yourself

Search for the regulator’s name and open its official site, or use the register links on our country sheets. Don’t follow a link from the broker’s site or an email: clones build fake register pages.

2. Match more than the number

Search the register by the licence number and by the company name. The entry lists the firm’s registered name, and usually its website and phone number. If the site you’re on, or the number that called you, isn’t listed, you may not be dealing with the licensed firm.

3. Read the status

“Authorised” is what you want. Lapsed, revoked, cancelled or “no longer authorised” means the firm can’t offer you regulated services under that licence.

4. Check the company on your agreement

Brands often trade through several companies. The one named on your account agreement is the one whose licence protects you. Our licence maps show each company separately.
